Snow Chains
If you're going skiing, it is obligatory to fit snow chains in certain resorts (check before you travel), generally, snow chains should be used on packed snow. If you don't own any then consider purchasing some but make sure they are suitable for your vehicle and tyre sizes. Quality retailers will be happy to advise you on the best set for your needs.
The ideal set of snow chains will have a larger number of chains in the contact patch. As a guide, for the average tyre, there should be a minimum of 12 chains crossing the tyre. Once purchased, take some time the learn to fit and remove the chains efficiently. It would be less than ideal to be fitting your chains for the first time, half way up a mountain in sub-zero conditions with a blizzard blowing! A couple of hours in the sun at home will save frozen fingers when its really necessary to be quick!

If you're travelling to the ski slopes or travelling in the highlands and mountains here at home, make sure your snow chains are easily accessible for when you need them, pack the boot of the car with the things you're going to need en-route going in last! It would also be useful to think about carrying a pair of gloves and a lamp - perhaps a cyclists or hikers 'head' light as most people don't have three hands!
